This project will provide sustainable access to the most basic necessities: clean water and food through farming for families displaced by civil war in South Sudan.

Challenge

Emerging from six years of civil war South Sudan faces the worst humanitarian crisis on the African continent. Over 4 million people, a third of the population, are displaced internally or living in refugee camps abroad. Recent flooding caused almost one million more to leave their homes. These refugees are at risk of starvation and disease. This project will affect over 50,000 refugees that have now settled in Old Fangak, South Sudan.

Long-Term Impact

The new wells will provide ongoing access to clean water for 1500 people each. Many of the refugees plan on making Old Fangak their home. The clean water is the first step towards better health. The clean water means their children will no longer suffer from the water borne diseases which affect so many people in this region. The farming aid and training will help the refugees combat food insecurity. The World Food Program is warning of a growing food crisis in South Sudan. This will help.
