An estimated 4.2 million children are out of school in Afghanistan - one of the most challenging places on earth to be a child. For many Afghan children, completing primary school remains a distant dream. Global Education Campaign will provide a one-room school startup kit (2 Whiteboards, 40 mini chalkboards, 40 notebooks, 40 Pencils, 40 erasers, and 40 Sharpeners) and teacher training to help kickoff 25,000 volunteer-run, one-room schools, educating 100,000 out of school children.

Challenge

An estimated 4.2 million children are out of school in Afghanistan, of which 60% are girls. Afghanistan has experienced a continuous pattern of violent armed conflict since the early 1970s. The lack of educational opportunities and the resultant high illiteracy rates in Afghanistan have been significant causes of underdevelopment and the vicious cycles of conflict from the last four decades. As a result, many Afghan children have been deprived of their right to basic education.

Long-Term Impact

The project will enroll/assist 100,000 students in the first phase to provide a quality basic education system that would serve girls and boys equitably. Education represents Afghanistan's best chance of steering its way out of the current situation. Education will enable Afghan's to improve their living standards and promote development and peace in Afghanistan and across the world.
