The Youth4Literacy (Y4L) objective is to place reading assistants in each Grade 2/3 classroom in 22 schools in the Western Cape. Each classroom receives a box of storybooks and readers and each child in the class receives two or three paired reading sessions a week and has at least two stories read to class each week. In addition, each child is encouraged to read at home through the promotion of our data-free Storytime with Shine Mobi-Site and the provision of a quarterly @Home pack.

Challenge

In South Africa, 78% of Grade Four children cannot read for meaning compared to 4% internationally. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the largest disruption of education in history, having already had a near-universal impact on learners and teachers around the world. During lockdown it became painfully clear that children do not have resources at home, those most vulnerable or even worse off now. Going online was not an option due to limited access to data and technological devices.

Long-Term Impact

Your donation will ensure that in unstable Covid-19 times we deliver well-resourced reading support at homes and at schools provides caregivers and children with invaluable tools to help reduce the literacy gap between high and low achieving learners.
