SSLC's mission is to promote the physical, intellectual, psychological and social development of each special needs and physically disabled child. We do it through a holistic educational provision in an inclusive, empathetic, respectful and stimulating environment. We aim to grow our capacity to support the students so that they can progressively learn age-appropriate life skills and work skills, in order to achieve a degree of independence and dignity.
Challenge
Children and young adults living with disability face rejection, discrimination, and sometimes abuse in the communities they live in. Superstitions, tradition and poverty prevent families from giving them protection and care, and lack of resources in society means there are few opportunities to access special education. Without appropriate schooling and vocational training, they remain dependent, vulnerable, and unable to fend for themselves.
Long-Term Impact
The students will be the immediate beneficiaries, with the potential to grow into self-respecting adults, some with the ability to live independently and with dignity. Their families' burden of caring for them will be greatly reduced, which will be an especially big relief for aging parents and care-givers. The community's perception and acceptance of people with disabiity will improve, potentially triggering a change of attitudes and better resources to support disability needs.
