The New Horizons kids program supports basic needs for 350 kids at risk for Huntington's disease. We have also established a series of "Escuelitas/Talleres" (Workshop Schools) to ensure that kids receive basic education, learn a trade, and have access to psychological support. Kids & adolescents come from two towns in Venezuela with the highest incidence of HD in the world. Our teachers and psychologists ensure they get a chance in life. Participating students get a meal as well.
Challenge
The Huntington's Disease communities in Venezuela need our help. We started a kids assistance program in 2018, and it has grown to include 350 children from San Luis & Barranquitas. Their educational needs are urgent, as schools remain closed since the pandemic. Many of the kids live on the street, are malnourished, illiterate, and they try to care for an affected parent. Education is a key goal to get them out of poverty: learning to read, learning a trade, and learning to cope with the disease
Long-Term Impact
This project focuses on personalized learning experiences that will have a positive impact on the children's education & future. Focused on equity and quality with a strong collective action to bridge the educational gap caused by poverty and the current sociopolitical situation. The job training series consists of several short 72-hour training workshops, of which 12 hrs are for orientation in micro-enterprises. The intention is to prepare the adolescent for work & allow them to earn an income
