Fundacion Fraternidad sin Fronteras provides life quality to people with intellectual disability that were abandoned by their families in Mexico City. People with this condition have no access to services and have limited opportunities for social engagement. The organization has a innovative model that not only provides shelter and medical services, also delivers tools for skills development and basic capabilities for social inclusion. It promotes the culture of respect and tolerance among all.

Challenge

People with intellectual disability grow up with none or limited social support. In Mexico, they are invisible in the community and have no access to services and resources; 46% of people with intellectual disability have access to school and only 6% finishes it. Exclusion is an important factor in explaining the social isolation of individuals. Social isolation is a cause and a consequence of a range of difficult life situations that many people with intellectual disability experience.

Long-Term Impact

People with intellectual disability that access integral education will acquire the tools to reach independence, decision making by their own, knowledge and exercise of their rights; in consequence an active participation in the community reducing the exclusion gap.
