150 impoverished children from the Mathare slums in Kenya will be given an education, technical training, school materials, food and medical care.

Challenge

With dire poverty in the Mathare slums, few people/families can educate and provide the basic needs of their children leading to more than 260,000 children living/working in the streets of Nairobi. This project provides support, promote and secure children's rights to education, food, health and general well being in Mathare slums to over 150 children annually through empowering participatory processes and community outreach so that children may not end up on the streets or dead.

Long-Term Impact

The slum is a cycle of poverty. Street children grow up without an education and have children who then become street children. Education is the only way out of the slum, for a productive, independent life. Overall we have seen 450 young people pass through the project and currently we are educating 106 in formal schools while 48 teenage mothers are under taking courses in hairdressing and tailoring. The teenage mothers are assisted by us to start their own businesses and become self reliant.
