Mitra Jyothi gives special attention to the empowerment of visually impaired (VI) girls through learning. This organization support higher education of visually impaired girls from remote villages and with poor socio-economic backgrounds. Mitra Jyothi identifies VI girls who have completed class 10 with good academics and enroll them in institutes in Bangalore for higher education. Through this program, poor VI girls get access to a good education and thereby enabling them for employment.
Challenge
The higher education options (after SSLC) are comparatively lesser in small cities and for children with special needs, the accessibility is further less. Compared to boys, the girls with visual disabilities get very little opportunity to explore the higher education options due to several social issues. Additionally, for the parents of these girls in an economically backward situation, it is not affordable for them to send their children to cities where higher education options are more.
Long-Term Impact
Education is a powerful tool for achieving socio-economic independence and empowerment. The opportunities for higher education are the first step of empowerment of these visually impaired girls. Through the education support program, Mitra Jyothi is providing them the opportunity to access higher education and also helping them to be empowered. Higher education and other skill development enable these girls to be eligible for various employment opportunities and lead independent life.
