Our collaborative project supports critical marine conservation in the Seychelles, surveying coral reef ecosystems, including megafaunas such as sharks and turtles. The project conducts marine research, environmental education, and capacity-building workshops, and works towards attitude, regulation, and policy changes, through activities operated in collaboration with NGOs, universities, and government agencies.
Challenge
The Seychelles 2 biggest industries in Seychelles, fishing and tourism, are directly dependent upon its amazing natural resources but pressures from climatic change and poaching, increasingly place those resources under threat with negative impacts on both the marine environment and the people reliant upon them.
Long-Term Impact
Our long term project contributes to the longest-running data set on coral reef health in Seychelles, whilst building capacity to conduct research locally. The actions of this project have worked towards changing attitudes towards marine biodiversity, and helped work towards policy development through the strengthening of local networks.
