Uganda registers over 12,000 road accidents annually with over 3,800 deaths; where school children are often victims. The poor mechanical and physical conditions of vehicles courtesy of the limited capacity of local mechanics to maintain and enhance safety systems; is very under-looked among reported causes of accidents yet such vehicles dominate the roads in Uganda. This project will train over 50,000 local mechanics, school children and motorists on road safety from a technical standpoint.

Challenge

Uganda ranks among the top countries in the world with highest rates of road accidents. In the last decade alone, over 150,000 road accident cases were recorded with over 40,000 fatalities. Over 20% victims were school children; according to statistics from Uganda police. Reports only highlight reckless, distracted, and under the influence driving as major causes of accidents; not accounting for excessive poor mechanical and physical states of vehicles in Uganda that lead to accidents.

Long-Term Impact

There will be a great reduction in the number of road crashes in Uganda due to improved automobile maintenance and safety enhancements that will minimise mechanical breakdowns and potentially dangerous modifications; improving livelihoods too. Through our technical approach and partnerships, over 100,000 primary school children will learn safety through precaution and communication skills with motorists. Regulatory measures on vehicle maintenance and motorist conduct will improve.
