Founded by Chef Jose Andres, World Central Kitchen (WCK) is first to the frontlines providing fresh meals in response to crises. Climate crisis-fueled extreme weather leads to most of the disasters to which we respond. WCK launched our Climate Disaster Fund so we have the resources to activate immediately and support affected communities with food, water, and other needs. WCK responds to climate disasters including hurricanes, monsoon rains, cyclones, and wildfires.
Challenge
The climate crisis increases the frequency and ferocity of natural disasters that affect communities around the world. While we don't know what might happen tomorrow, we do know that climate change is creating more intense catastrophes more often in every region of the world-and we've seen this time and again in 2022. Some regions are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and need more support than ever in coping with future disasters.
Long-Term Impact
Through our Climate Disaster Fund, WCK mobilizes with the "urgency of now" when climate disasters strike and advocates for improving access to nutritious food before, during, and after crises. While providing immediate food and water support, our relief model has longer-term impacts as we purchase ingredients locally, hire within the community, and prioritize uplifting the recovering local food systems to become stronger and more resilient in the face of future disaster.
