You can help the indigenous Mayan village of Chipozo, Guatemala and EWB-RTP build a system to bring clean drinking water for everyone. With accessible potable water, children can spend more time in school and families more time at work instead of seeking or carrying water and dealing with water-borne disease. Chipozo is a community of over 600, working to improve quality of life by addressing a basic human need: readily available drinking water. EWB-RTP is providing engineering & financial help.

Challenge

Chipozo is a remote, rugged, high region with no viable drinking water sources. A needs assessment told us families spend about 6 hours a week retrieving drinking water. The water table is much too low to build wells. People find small springs kms from town, get muddy water from local sources, or use rain catchment (in season). Our project will enable the community and EWB to eliminate gastrointestinal illness and redirect human resources and school time now spent obtaining clean water.

Long-Term Impact

A Community Water Board, created by revising community bylaws,was elected to manage the system, set and enforce policies for equitable distribution of water, and collect funds to operate and maintain the system. EWB-RTP will provide training on system maintenance and water hygiene practices. Imagine the quality-of-life improvement when clean, reliable water arrives! Your support can make this happen.
