Our goal at Lectores para el futuro is to build capacity providing professional development for educators teaching in grades K to 3rd in order for them to gain research-based strategies to teach how to read. Also, gaining skills to identify those who may have dyslexia or other reading difficulties. Our aim this academic year is to provide training to the 7 districs of the Department of Education in Puerto Rico. This way, we can continue building readers for the future.
Challenge
The current reading gap. The absence of instruction or early intervention creates a wider gap between the execution of at-risk readers and their peers. The National Institute of Health confirms that 95% of the students that face challenges in the process of acquiring reading respond positively to intervention if it is provided before the end of 1st grade. Commonly, the educational systems fail to provide such intervention in or during this period of time.
Long-Term Impact
Our goal is to impact all of the 7 educational regions of Puerto Rico's Department of Education and provide 21 hours of workshop (per region). No other workshops in Spanish has been provided for the Department of Education in this methodology of teaching reading to the staff and faculty of Puerto Rico's public schools.
