There are 43.7 million refugees in the world today. Refugees have well-founded fears of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, and other factors. CARE places the needs and rights of women and refugee girls at the forefront, reflecting CARE's experience that empowering women and girls is a critical pathway to reduce vulnerability and long-term poverty. CARE provides short and long term assistance to refugees- from shelter, food, water as well as education, health and security.
Challenge
Displacement from wars, conflict and persecution are at the highest levels ever recorded. Entire populations are living in fear and running for their lives, often to other countries that are lacking in infrastructure and resources themselves. CARE responds to the needs of refugees worldwide, with Syrian refugees at the forefront as well as refugees from South Sudan, Pakistan, DRC, Nigeria and other conflict areas.
Long-Term Impact
Two-thirds of the world's refugees have been in exile for more than five years, many of them with no end in sight. CARE reached more than 7 million people last year through its humanitarian responses worldwide. CARE raises awareness about sexual exploitation and other forms of gender-based violence to protect refugees from any and all forms of abuse. Through our psychosocial programs, we assist refugee women, men and children in coping with their experiences of war and violence.
