This project supports Child Protection in South-West Cameroon. This is done by helping outstanding orphanages and spaces for children operating in conflict areas. Since 2015, bore holes, livestock-rearing facilities, and schools have been built with the donations received. Currently most donations are used to pay teachers of two community schools and orphanages: Mah Di's and Hope Alive, with 250 children in total. The project also covers emergency response costs for vulnerable children at risk.

Challenge

Since late 2017, there is an active conflict in Anglophone Cameroon that has killed at least 2,400 persons and displaced 670,000. Some children have been separated from their parents due to the on-going killing and confrontations. Since 2016, education has been suspended due to the political conflict. If a child was 7 in late 2016, just beginning to master reading and writing, by now he is 10 and has forgotten everything about it already. A child that is 7 today might have never been to school.

Long-Term Impact

Children living with trauma will benefit specialized education and cover the knowledge gap they have with their age-mates. A child that is 17 in Anglophone Cameroon will still have to go through 4 more years of education before reaching University. This will not be the case for the 136 children that will manage to stay on track. They will gain skills and receive psychosocial support that will help them achieve self-independence and assist them to grow up and find their place in society.
