This project will build a computer classroom for our school in Zanzibar, providing people often left out of the tourism sector with the ability to learn and develop computer and I.T. skills. With these skills they can leverage technology and the internet to market, communicate, present, and analyze their own small tourism businesses. Over 100 students each year will benefit from this project, a majority of them being women and youth, who are often left out of the tourism economy.
Challenge
Tourism is the largest economic driver on Zanzibar but the local population, especially women and youth, is often left out. Even when these individuals are able to start small tourism businesses, they often lack the technical skills and expertise to utilize the internet, social media, email, and software to improve, analyze, operate, and market their business.
Long-Term Impact
This project will build a computer classroom to educate hundreds of students (mainly women & youth). Many of these students will go on to open their own small tourism businesses. The technical skills they learned in the computer classroom will help them operate, analyze, improve, and market their businesses. This allows them to benefit from the tourism economy, rise out of poverty, and improve the livelihoods of their families.
