This project will develop the farm at Sky Is The Limit in Fort Portal, Uganda, to provide daily, nutritious meals to 400 schoolchildren, aged 3-14 years, including 45 residential children living with HIV/Aids or who have lost parents to the disease, and are in need of a safe, caring home. The farm will also offer practical training in agriculture to local young people and graduates of Sky Is The Limit School so that they can gain vital skills for employment, and provide for their families.

Challenge

Fort Portal is one of the poorest regions of Uganda according to the Ugandan Ministry of Health, with high food insecurity rates caused by increasing poverty, use of unsustainable agriculture methods, and inadequate food storage. Poverty and food insecurity leave many malnourished, weak, and unable to fight illness or focus in school. SITL tackles hunger by giving daily school meals to its 400 pupils, but is currently unable to grow enough food sustainably in its 8-acre farm.

Long-Term Impact

The project will 1. sustainably provide enough food year round for 400 children (and staff) at Sky Is The Limit allowing them enough nourishment for the physical development, boost health and well-being, and improve focus in lessons. Thus reducing dependancy on annual funding for food supplies. 2. offer local young people the chance to learn new skills which will provide for their families and reduce poverty. 2. create job opportunities for local farm workers.
