This project provides Braille books for 4000 visually challenged students in South India. This will help them become independent and own personal copies of the books as that is lacking now. This will help in widening their horizons and gaining immense knowledge. Indian Association for the Blind (lAB),based in Madurai, South India, is a well-known non-profit organization working at the grass roots level for education, employment and rehabilitation of people with visual challenges from rural areas.
Challenge
The major problem faced by the visually challenged students now is the lack of Braille sheets due to the high costs involved. So printing more Braille books is not possible. Owing to this problem, they are forced to share their books with other students. This does not allow them to have it at their disposal to study at their own pace. Also, these books cannot be used for more than 2 years as they tear due to constant use. This being the case, there arises the need to print more books.
Long-Term Impact
Through this project, we aim to benefit more than 4000 students. Each student will be able to have their own study material and gain access to their favourite reads. This will boost their self-esteem as they will gain the same knowledge and expertise as sighted students. This will help fulfil their dreams and hopes for the future.Being well-read, they can shine well in life and become self-reliant.Their families and future generations will also be benefited by way of their knowledge.
