The case of Beatriz is emblematic since it exposed the severe consequences of criminalizing abortion, a restriction that prevented her from accessing an abortion in a timely manner when her life and health were at risk. Thus, this project will contribute to ensuring that governments recognize abortion as a health service and ensure that women have access to accurate information and safe abortion care.

Challenge

In Latin America and the Caribbean, abortion rights are often treated from a moral and ethical perspective, rather than as a public health issue. Millions of Latin American women risk death or imprisonment because of the decisions they make about their bodies, and these situations have a different impact on them depending on race, religion, education and income level, among other reasons. In general, abortion continues to be closely associated with a series of stereotypes and prejudices.

Long-Term Impact

Women and girls are essential to the well-being of their families and communities. By protecting and expanding information through communication campaigns about their sexual and reproductive rights, as well as information about the legal and clinical framework for abortion in their countries, and the support networks that exist, Ipas is contributing to long-term global development and stability.
