Sustainable Bolivia is seeking support to build the very first research and conservation station in the Bolivian Amazon. This station will allow us to monitor and identify current and new species of flora and fauna, extend our reforestation efforts, and work to increase the size and scope of the Aquicuana Reserve. Furthermore, this station will allow us to effectively engage with local communities and policy makers, providing long-term opportunities for sustainable development.
Challenge
The need to protect the Amazon and provide sustainable livelihood to its residents impacts the entire world. Forests are facing increasing threats from slash and burn agriculture, wildlife poaching, mining, illegal logging, oil prospecting, and large infrastructure projects. At current rates, more than half of the Amazon rainforest may be destroyed or severely damaged by 2030.
Long-Term Impact
Potential long-term impact include: 1) Expanding the knowledge of local flora and fauna. 2) Increasing the size and scope of the protected area. 3) Improving the technical capacity of local citizens for conservation and sustainable management of their natural resources. 4) Strengthening the regional capacity for environmental governance. 5) Affecting policy change with scientific studies carried out at the research station.
