Due to stigma and misunderstanding of the Autism Spectrum Disorder, a considerable number of autistic Kenyans, consisting of both children and adults are locked up in their homes and hidden from the public eye. For this and many other reasons, Step Up 4 Autism is organizing an annual run to set up a therapy center for children with Autism in Eldoret, Kenya. The therapy center will provide free therapy and support services to children and adults with autism from the rural areas of Rift Valley.

Challenge

There are currently more than 300 children with special needs that do not have access to therapy services due to the tough economic times, lack of awareness, and abject poverty in the rural areas. This situation makes the rights of children with disabilities not be guaranteed. Day in day out parents lock them up in homes due to the stigma associated with having a child with disabilities and they are denied access to therapy services that could greatly improve their ability to live independently.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help over 300 children from rural areas to get access to occupational, speech, and physical therapy services. The services will turn them into young independent boys and girls who are able to rise above their conditions and pursue their dreams in life.
