Region: Afghanistan

Afghanistan has historically been a difficult place for women to access education. Even before the Taliban came to power, women faced challenges in pursuing education and often had limited opportunities for schooling. Under the Taliban's regime in the 1990s, girls were banned from attending school, and women were prevented from working outside the home or receiving an education. After the fall of the Taliban in 2001, there was progress made in improving access to education for women, with more girls enrolling in school and women participating in higher education and professional fields. However, women's education in Afghanistan still faces significant challenges today. Ongoing conflict, poverty, and cultural attitudes toward women's roles and education have limited opportunities for many girls and women. In some areas of the country, it is still not safe for girls to attend school due to violence and attacks on schools. Additionally, there are not enough qualified female teachers, and many families cannot afford to send their daughters to school or prioritize their education over other responsibilities. Efforts have been made to address these challenges, such as initiatives to provide girls with safe transportation to school and programs to train female teachers. However, much more needs to be done to ensure that girls and women have equal access to education in Afghanistan.
