Imagine not being able to read, write or communicate. Literacy opens the doors to learning and a world of endless opportunities. That's why we're transforming lives through this innovative, best-practice program for early years education. We break the cycle of illiteracy and disadvantage by empowering community members to teach vulnerable children the literacy skills required for success at school and beyond. Because we believe literacy is freedom.

Challenge

Being able to read and write is a basic human right. Yet, Indigenous Australian children continue to fall through the cracks of our education system, trapping them in a cycle of vulnerability and illiteracy. This devastating gap is particularly evident in remote Indigenous communities, where the writing abilities of year 9 students are at year 1 level. If not addressed in the early years, this issue continues into adulthood, and this is a national tragedy.

Long-Term Impact

This project supports ALNF's belief in creating systemic change and capacity within communities to empower individuals to be their own change makers. Sustaining improved literacy outcomes should not be dependent on the ALNF team working directly with children. Instead, ALNF focuses on working with local community members, to ensure long-term positive outcomes for both adults and children.
