Raising funds for carrying out Pure Tone Average (PTA) Assessment, Tympanometry Test, ear cleaning, purchase of digital hearing devices and associated accessories, fitting, programming, and routine review, and providing school tuition and school feeding fees as well as providing start-up capital for Income Generating projects for 25 Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in Katakwi District of Uganda. These children are often stigmatized, rejected, neglected and considered a curse in the family.
Challenge
According to World Bank, about 16% of Ugandan children live with a disability. Only 5% of these children with disabilities can access education through Inclusive Schools and 10% through special schools (UNICEF, 2014). According to the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports (2017), 27.2% of the 172,864 children with special needs enrolled in primary schools had hearing loss. Of these children, 99% have no hearing aids, their basic needs are not met, and they are often rejected by their families.
Long-Term Impact
The long-term impact of this project is increased school enrollment, retention and completion among Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in Katakwi district while improving their quality of life (Refer to attached documents for more information about this project).
