We are part of a judicial trial in Romania involving 66 fighting dogs. The investigation will be a long-lasting one and the raid was carried out by local and international (US intelligence services, Romania and Europol) collaboration, targeting offences including "fraudulent finances" and "organization of illegal fights between or with animals", by 7 defendants from Romania, Czech Republic, Italy and Serbia. Until the trial will end, the dogs are in our care, medically and financially.
Challenge
"80% of dog fighting in South Africa come from the Balkans (Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia)" - DogTrust Worldwide. On the 24th of June, we received a call from Animal Protection Bureau Cluj, for an unprecedented action in Romania, a flagrant dog fighting network. We have only received support from the local institutions for the first 2 months and now we are in a situation to find other ways of funding, in order to put pressure on this case, prevent further abuse, and implement a monitoring plan.
Long-Term Impact
Since this is the first big case taken to court in Romania regarding illegal fighting dogs, beyond the fact that on a moral and ethical level, living beings should not be returned to those who abused and exploited them, these dogs are the living evidence in a criminal case, and are to be returned to the place where they were taken by the police, by a court decision. Loaded guns, living evidence, dogs abused and trained to kill are placed in the hands of the defendants.
