Families with a differently-abled person in Palestine, face community stigma and a lack of lack of knowledge and resources to deal with their loved one's condition. Families often hide their loved one away and thus deprive him/her of essential assistance and themselves of support. The Homes' outreach program provides in-home diagnoses, equipment, support and education on how best to care for their loved one--thereby improving the lives of all family members.

Challenge

Families with a severely impaired loved one, isolated by social stigma, lack the training, the equipment, and to enable them to best to care for their loved one. As he/she grows physically, parents age, siblings marry and move, the situation becomes even more difficult, often resulting in the person's increased isolation, decreased health, functioning and quality of life.. Beds in residential programs are far too limited for the people in need.

Long-Term Impact

This program, already underway with 8 of the dozens of families in our area, will enhance the lives of the patients by providing essential them with essential therapies, and their caregivers with the skills, equipment and support to enable them to remain living at home. Caregivers are invited to participate in our existing family support program so that they can overcome the social stigma and isolation of having an impaired loved one.
