The Sarmiento neighborhood in Buenos Aires faces many socio-environmental problems and families are in a highly-vulnerable situation. The Jardin de la Montana is the only educational space for preschool aged children there. It serves 40 children from 1 to 3 years old and also offers school support and multiple recreational activities. Having this space is essential so that mothers can access educational and work opportunities. The project consists of increasing the garden's capacity by 50%.

Challenge

This community faces several challenges that impact children such as job insecurity, drug use, and parent incarceration. In this context, education is crucial for early child development and it also provides childcare so that parents have access to work opportunities. Unfortunately, The Jardin de la Montana is the only daycare in the area and the current building is small, outdated, and lacks a common recreational area as well as a teacher's office.

Long-Term Impact

Upon completion of this project, El Jardin de la Montana will have improved facilities and an increased capacity to better serve the community's long-term needs for both childcare and effective early childhood education.
