Help families in the Cangrejal Valley of Honduras to gain access to clean drinking water and improved sanitation to reduce the number of child deaths due to contaminated water. Your support will help local communities to develop a sustainable, community-run water system that also includes composting toilets, rainwater drainage and water reuse.
Challenge
33% of Hondurans lack access to clean drinking water, resulting in disease, poor hygiene, and needless child deaths. Water contamination is a major public health issue, and most communities lack proper waste-water disposal systems or easily maintained latrines. Each year, too many deaths are attributed to the lack of clean water. Many more suffer from diarrhea or other illnesses - due to the lack not only of basic infrastructure but also of awareness of the dangers of bathing in dirty water.
Long-Term Impact
This project will reduce disease and sanitation risks for impoverished rural families in Honduras. A locally run water board will protect and conserve the water source, monitor water quality, and provide training on system maintenance, making it a permanent and sustainable solution for clean water.
