Education is the key to pulling oneself out of the cycle of poverty and dependency. Nyumbani Village, located in the eastern province of Kitui, Kenya will provide tertiary education for the current 37 students who are graduating from seconday school. This specialized training will help secure their path to successful employment, thereby ensuring their future.

Challenge

Children are being orphaned in large numbers in Kenya due to HIV/AIDS. Orphans who have come to Nyumbani have received housing, clothes, good nutrition, medical care, as well as primary and secondary school education. Due to their status as orphans, many of whom are HIV+, higher education is critical for these young adults to overcome their life circumstances and be competitive in the economy to secure their future.

Long-Term Impact

Educating children will turn the tide of poverty, while building confidence and self-worth. Young adults will be gainfully employed, becoming role models for other Village residents to work hard so they too can become productive members of society. As young adults leave the Village, it frees up those residential spots for others who have been orphaned by AIDS. The cycle of hard work and higher education has been established, which will positively effect the 1,000 residents and all who follow.
