Macheo feeds and provides daily care to 30 malnourished children under the age of 4 in the slums of Thika, Kenya. They administer nutritious meals, basic healthcare, child development activities and parental training, to effectively change the future of these disadvantaged children. Malnutrition during the first 1000 days of life, irreversibly stunts a child's body and brain development, permanently limiting their potential. Therefore, give hope to the hungry and a future to a child.
Challenge
In the Kiandutu slums of Thika Kenya, parents struggle to earn enough to feed their children and malnutrition is prevalent. Many children are orphaned and cared for by relatives. Guardians raising children in an urban slum are faced by severe economic hardship and poor hygiene. Children do not know when they will eat next and the food is of poor nutritional quality. This results in malnutrition, potentially effecting the child's entire life by stunting their brain and body development.
Long-Term Impact
Over 120 young children a year are given nutritional food, stimulation and set on a path to normal development. Guardians are given knowledge regarding parenting, hygiene, family planning and informed of government programs. For some of the participants a helping hand in the form of knowledge and guidance is sufficient to give them an improved existence. Others are placed in the Empowerment Program, given seed money to start a small business, ensuring a more secure income to feed their families.
