The Ishahayi Beach School Foundation supports a successful school serving 200 students in rural Nigeria. The Light School is the only school convenient to the island; the transportation difficulties of getting to the nearest government school discourage families from supporting their children's continued education. In the 2013-2014 school year, IBSF will support the Light School's first junior secondary school classes. Your donations will make these new educational opportunities possible.
Challenge
Ishahayi is a small Yoruba fishing village located on the barrier island between Lagos and Badagry. There is little industry on the island, and no electricity. Being only accessible by boat, this area is isolated from the infrastructure and support that mainland areas of Lagos enjoy, such as a government-funded school. This project will provide scholarships, maintain facilities and support the teachers of the newly expanded Light School, allowing more children to get an education.
Long-Term Impact
The Light School currently educates around 200 children. As the school adds grade levels and draws additional children, we see our reach and impact increase. The village respects the work of the Light School and our efforts are raising the educational standard of the entire community.
