Region: Kerala, India

Kerala, a state located in the southern region of India, is facing a number of climate change challenges. Climate change is now affecting every country on every continent and it is disrupting national economies and affecting lives. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels rising, weather events becoming more extreme and greenhouse gas emissions are now at their highest levels in history. Without action, the world’s average surface temperature is likely to surpass 3 degrees Celsius this century. With the formulation of the National Action Plan on Climate Change through its eight missions (currently twelve) for addressing climate change concerns, the Government of Kerala has been working on State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) to address climate change issues at the state level. The Kerala State Action Plan on Climate Change was drafted by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) with relevant departments, agencies, and institutes providing inputs. Some of the major problems that the state is experiencing due to climate change include:

1. Increasing temperatures: Kerala has been experiencing an increase in temperatures over the years. This has resulted in a rise in heat-related illnesses and deaths.

2. Changes in rainfall patterns: Kerala is also experiencing changes in rainfall patterns, with some areas experiencing drought and others experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding.

3. Sea level rise: Kerala has a long coastline, and rising sea levels are causing erosion and damage to coastal infrastructure.

4. Loss of biodiversity: Climate change is also leading to the loss of biodiversity in Kerala. Many species of plants and animals are facing the risk of extinction due to changes in temperature, rainfall, and habitat loss.

5. Agricultural impacts: Kerala's agriculture sector is also being impacted by climate change. Changes in rainfall patterns, soil erosion, and increasing temperatures are affecting crop yields and productivity.
