Retaining good teachers is the key to a quality education. Bishop Comboni College Kambuga, in SW Uganda, is a highly rated secondary school with 620 boarding students. Teacher effectiveness is the key to student performance. The major incentive for recruiting and retaining quality teachers is to provide clean and safe housing. An area on the campus is being developed for a Faculty Housing Community. The school's outstanding academic performance will continue with continuity in teachers.

Challenge

A recent demise of housing available to teachers at a location adjacent to the campus gate has created a dire situation. Teachers are currently in sub-standard housing. Research on academic achievement is clear: Teacher effectiveness is the school-related factor that most affects student performance. For the past six years, student performance has continued to rise at Bishop Comboni College. Safe and stable homes for the teachers is the single most important factor in recruiting.

Long-Term Impact

Teacher retention will enhance the performance of the students. Teacher loyalty will be stronger and students will be empowered to establish long-term relationships with these mentors and dedicated teachers. This is the basis for a life-long commitment to the school. The campus is home to students for four to six years and will be supported by them in the future when there is continuity among teachers and staff.
