Sao Paulo is a thriving metropolis but inequality means that many struggle to break the cycle of poverty, especially young women. Goal for Equality seeks to empower marginalised young women in Vila Albertina, a favela located in the north of Sao Paulo, by training female coaches to deliver mixed football leagues and education on gender issues to other children and young people in the community. Already supported by Cityzens Giving, your donation will help even more young people in Sao Paulo.

Challenge

In cities such as Sao Paulo, conditions are improving but poverty and social inequality mean that there are few opportunities for young people. Girls and young women are affected disproportionately due to gender discrimination. Whereas boys are encouraged to play sports and pursue a higher education, girls are more likely to remain at home. This can lead to teenage pregnancies and higher rates of unemployment.

Long-Term Impact

Goal for Equality will impact the lives of 350 people each year. A core group of young people will be trained to deliver weekly sessions, increasing the number of young female leaders and girls taking part in football and education sessions. The wider community will take part in events and mobilisations, changing attitudes and perceptions towards women and girls.
