Founded in 2017, Esperanza Urbana is a non-profit organization that offers hope and opportunities to the homeless community living on the streets in San Jose. This project proposal is to sponsor young homeless men that are ready to change their lives. We will support them while they attend a local rehab center and receive drug addiction treatments. The program is nine months long during which they receive counseling, work training and social skill building in a beautiful rural setting.

Challenge

Based on data collected by World Bank in 2017, approximately 20% of people in Costa Rica are living below the poverty line; the highest it has been in decades. While it is very difficult to get exact data on the number of people experiencing homelessness at any time, it is estimated that more than 3000 people are living on the streets in Costa Rica with over half of this population located in San Jose (SIPO/IMAS, 2018).

Long-Term Impact

By freeing themselves of drug addiction, these young men can get an education, a home, a job, become pillars of their community, support their families and feel great about themselves. Utilizing our holistic approach, we plan to help those successful in rehab reconnect with family, gain employment and become involved in giving back to their communities. Many people we have already helped through rehabilitation join our large volunteer base to help other homeless in the community.
