The exotic lionfish has invaded the Mesoamerican Reef, and has become a serious threat to the marine ecosystem. With your help we'll be able to raise funds for lionfish control activities such as communication campaigns, training workshops on capture and handling methods and field activities to control this species. The funds will be used to support fishers organizations, NGOs and authorities within the four MAR countries that are involved in lionfish control initiatives.

Challenge

The Lionfish is a predatory venomous fish which has been accidentally introduced in the Caribbean Basin. As a carnivore with no natural predators in the Caribbean, it can significantly reduce biodiversity of a local habitat and can drive important fish species to extinction, negatively affecting coral reef ecosystems.

Long-Term Impact

By securing the MAR reef ecosystems from harmful species that threatens to reduce its biodiversity significantly and guaranteeing the sustainability of its native species, the project will ensure food and income for the fishermen of the coastal villages within the four countries of the MAR, and it will be an example for other regions on how to eradicate lionfish.
