Champey Academy of Arts has grown from its original summer program and now provides year round fun, education and friendship to disadvantaged children and to orphans, building self esteem through classes in painting , drawing and in traditional Cambodian dance and music. The camp/academy now has dozens of year round neighborhood kids attending 3 hour morning or afternoon sessions 6 days per week. We will still offer a special summer program for children for the 2 month school break
Challenge
There were few opportunities for orphaned and disadvantaged children for outings, so classes at Champey Academy of Arts and its Summer Arts Camp provide a happy exposure to Cambodia's culture while building self esteem through dance, arts and music. Originally started as a summer program, Champey has evolved into a year round program serving disadvantaged children in the community, still offering a Summer Arts Program for disadvantaged local children and other children in our programs
Long-Term Impact
We have seen through our long history (since 1999) that this type of class in dance, music and art provides fun, education and friendship to orphaned and disadvantaged children and the discipline and accomplishment gained from participation in the program builds self esteem and allows these children to be better prepared for adult life. Over the years we have seen several of our students transform themselves from student to teacher and mentor as they themselves become the teachers.
