St Martins School and the Kibagare Community, Nilinde Nijijenge aims to support a sustainable community and in doing so enable this Community to maintain the support that they give. Working and focussing on those most in need and those who can be enabled. By creating self-sufficiency across households, we are improving the community in itself. Kenya is enduring its worst drought in 40 years. Food and water shortages, coupled with skyrocketing prices are hard-hitting in slum communities
Challenge
The women in Cooperative Groups in the Kibagare slum are facing their hardest times. On the back of Covid, and now Kenya's worst drought in over 40 years. We are looking to support those most in need and those who are enabled. Employment for slum communities is often in the form of casual labour, and this is unreliable for families as a dependable source of income. Many families are single mothers with several young children. These families can become vulnerable very easily.
Long-Term Impact
Self sufficiency, families with security, well fed children who are able to attend school are elements of creating a stronger, safer community and moving families away from the problems that are created from financial and social vulnerability. Children can receive better care, grow in a more secure environment. Single mothers are not forced into less desirable ways of finding income. The process is slow, but the long term effects are to benefit the community as a whole.
