30% of the children who join grade 1 drop out in grade 1 before they learn to even write their name. Most if not all of them have never had a chance to go attend pre-school or any ECD centre. This project aims to support the set up and operation of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in rural public schools in Uganda. This will provide access to quality education and a learning environment for millions of pre-school children across the country, setting them on a success trajectory.

Challenge

In Uganda, 30% of children who join grade 1 drop out in grade 1 partly because they did not have a chance to attend pre-school and get into that rhythm. The government does not currently invest in pre-primary education leaving it to the private sector who focus on urban and semi-urban areas where parents can pay. This has left millions of children without access to this critical learning stage. This project will serve 10,000 children.

Long-Term Impact

Each ECD center is projected to serve at least 100 pre-school children. The Library will serve the entire school population mostly between 800 - 2,000 and the entire community. The impact is however far reaching especially as these children start to join grade school. We anticipate that it will reduce the grade 1 - grade 2 dropout rate by 90%, significantly lift children out of learning poverty and improve overall completion rates and learning outcomes in schools in Uganda
