Green Care Association plans to plant 10,000 bee-friendly, medicinal or fruit bearing native trees to combat desertification in Northwest Cameroon. These native forests will help combat climate change (and donors offset their own carbon footprints), preserve fertile land, and provide income to the local communities. Green Care works with local populations to teach tree management, water catchment protection, and income generating activities such as bee keeping and fruit harvesting.

Challenge

Climate change has lead to rapid changes in weather patterns and increasing episodes of drought in the northwest of Cameroon leading to the desertification of the region. This has lead to poor crop yields, decreased access to water, and further destruction of the native forests. Trees offer protection from the encroaching dry lands, providing cover for water catchments to continue to run, for bees to flourish and for animals to survive.

Long-Term Impact

The 10,000 trees will provide water catchment protection, bee keeping opportunities, fruit, and protection against erosion for a population of 15,000 people for the next 20 years.
