Fundacion Jacinto Convit seeks to impact 200 vulnerable children in public hospitals in Venezuela during 6 months, by providing them with a free of cost, early, precise and personalized molecular diagnosis in leukemia & HIV. This project will significantly improve the quality-of-life of diagnosed patients, their prognosis and response to treatment, as well as their survival rate due to early detection, stratification of disease risk and the possibility of determining the most adequate treatment.

Challenge

Leukemia is the most common cancer in children less than 5 years old, accounting for the highest number of deaths. Meanwhile, children under 15 account for 10% of new HIV infections and 15% of AIDS-related deaths. A precise diagnosis and control of the disease significantly increases the child's survival rate and improves her/his quality of life. However, the high cost for a timely, specialized and personalized diagnosis does not make it accessible for the majority of children in Venezuela.

Long-Term Impact

This project can be scaled up to impact more children across Venezuela. In 3 years we can benefit 1400 infants and 5600 immediate relatives, performing 7000 tests; and in 5 years 2400 children and 9600 relatives, performing 12000 tests.
