GEANCO (www.geanco.org) saves and transforms lives in Africa. We conduct complex surgical missions and run an innovative program to fight anemia in Nigeria. Through our system of modern, solar-powered rural maternal clinics, we help poor, vulnerable pregnant women safely deliver healthy babies.

Challenge

In 2013, the widely-respected magazine "The Economist" declared Nigeria "the worst place for a baby to enter the world." The country has the second highest number of maternal deaths annually, behind only India. Every ten minutes, at least one Nigerian woman dies in childbirth. Each year, one million Nigerian children do not live to see their fifth birthday. Nigeria has the second largest HIV-infected population in the world and most children living with HIV in all of Africa.

Long-Term Impact

We have screened over 25,000 women and children for anemia. We cover the cost of anemia treatment and prenatal care for 300 vulnerable pregnant women each month. We have helped over 130 Nigerians "rise and walk" through our free joint replacement surgeries. Our innovative bone fracture repair system will empower Nigerian surgeons to fix broken bones in a sustainable, ongoing basis. We upgrade local hospitals and train their staff on the latest medical and surgical techniques.
