What comes to your mind when you think about young people and what would you say are their top priorities? "Defending their rights" may not be the first thing that we think of. From a very young age, people in Mexico have to deal with several obstacles in order to exercise their rights, such as freedom of expression, education, liberty and even the right to life. This campaign seeks to support them, so they can keep working collectively to search and build a dignified and peaceful country.
Challenge
A third of the mexican population are young people, and they face a context of structural violence and inequality. In 2019, according to official data, 37 out of 100 homicides in the country were of young people. Mexico is the third country in Latin America where the most activists are killed, thus, being young and a defender of human rights puts them in a situation of greater vulnerability. In spite of this context young people are genuinely interested in building a just and fair country.
Long-Term Impact
With the support that young human rights defenders obtain through this campaign, you will help them continue fighting for their rights and be able to exercise them in a comprehensive way. This will be possible through their participation in advocacy actions, workshops that strengthen their skills and knowledge, meetings with other young people of the country to exchange their experiences and by receiving attention to address the negative impacts that the human rights defense has on them.
