This project will provide 50 persons with disabilities who live in far locations of Cochabamba with home physiotherapy sessions, assistive devices and medicines. Additionally, training sessions will be developed to individuals, their families and disability people organizations, allowing 200 persons to strengthen their self-esteem, capabilities and advocacy skills.
Challenge
Many persons with disabilities of the Cochabamba region of Bolivia face severe difficulties in accessing quality rehabilitation services, due to a poor public health system. Assistive devices like prosthesis, wheelchairs and most of the specific medicines are only available at high prices in the private market. In addition, misinformation and stigma towards disability persists in certain sectors of the population and prevents them from fully participating in their communities.
Long-Term Impact
Through the training program and constant advice, disability people organization will enhance their knowledge and skills, being able to advocate for their rights towards public authorities. Public officials and authorities will increase their capacity to develop adequate public policies. Community itself will lead its own development in an inclusive way.
