This project will tackle incidents of underaged vulnerable girls being trafficked as house helps or engaging in transactional sex for financial independence. The centre will engage in adult education for these girls, give them intensive marketable and life skills training to help them develop critical thinking, self-awareness, healthcare, and heightened aspiration to improve themselves and become successful adults.
Challenge
The culture and other practices in our community, limit hope and aspiration for girls and/or lead to increasing vulnerability to HIV infection for adolescent girls. The families place these girls in homes to serve as house helps or force them into financially profitable marriages, or to engage in transactional sex. Trafficking these girls create serious long-lasting health and safety complications for them. Many are sent to homes that expose them to sexual violence from the males in the homes.
Long-Term Impact
We expect a change in the way the girls seek to lift themselves out of poverty, gradual attitudinal change towards denying girls opportunities, a 20 to 25% reduction in sexual violence against house helps in our target areas, and a 15 to 20% reduction in early age sex situations in our target areas within two years. The girls will acquire skills that will give them financial independence and make them grow as sustainable adults. The families will not have the need to send them out as maids.
