This project will promote education and provide a better healthcare for 81 children with albinism in rural western Rwanda. Most importantly, the project will help to build a more inclusive community for people living with albinism. To achieve this, albinism awareness campaigns will be conducted to eliminate discrimination against them.

Challenge

Albinism is profoundly misunderstood in most of rural Rwanda communities. Children with albinism are frequently abandoned by their families because of erroneous beliefs and myths that they may be a source of misfortune. This negatively impacts their rights to basic education and health services. Four in five children with albinism do not attend schools while most of them suffer from and often die of skin cancer due to the lack of appropriate equipment and suitable lotion for their skin.

Long-Term Impact

The project will reach 81 albinos children in rural villages of western Rwanda. Education for these children will be promoted and a better healthcare will be provided to them. Furthermost, the project will eventually eliminate discrimination against people living with albinism from these rural communites.
