This project will allow 80 street working children to learn and build dignified lives for themselves. They spend the majority of their time on the streets, working to contribute to the survival of their families, who live in poverty. More than half of these children don't attend school and don't know how to read or write. To support them, our educators bring the classroom to the streets where they work. It is here, our first intervention begins; giving them back the right to education.
Challenge
The children spend most of their day working alongside their family members in public spaces, to attend their basic needs on a day-to-day level. The public space is a noisy and unsafe environment for children to grow up in. Their physical and mental health, well-being and dignity are put at risk, as it is not unusual for them to face mistreat, discrimination, violence or abuse. Education is not a priority, and this prevents them from improving their situation and fight their way out of poverty.
Long-Term Impact
Once the children develop basic psychological, emotional and cognitive skills, they will have the opportunity to enrol in a normal school. This way they will manage to escape risks and dangers such as drugs, violence and abuse. Instead, they'll be able to plan for a better life than their parents had and as a result, they can break the cycle of poverty and ensure that their own future children won't have to work on the streets to survive.
