Help children ages 4-21 born with disabilities receive needed Education and Health Care in Honduras. These children are living with disabilities such as Down's Syndrome or cerebral palsy and are not receiving services. They are bright children who have special needs and just need a chance to learn to read, do math, receive appropriate health care and therapy, and gain confidence. Un Mundo works with parents, children, teachers and the community to make these vital services a reality.

Challenge

Persons with disabilities in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in Central America, are stigmatized and rarely receive support. Many schools have no accommodations for children with special needs. Thanks to Un Mundo's training of teachers and volunteers and the strong parents' network advocating for their children with disabilities, we are seeing students with disabilities succeed in the classroom. We are also partnering with a health care provider to provide therapy for the children.

Long-Term Impact

Un Mundo's holistic approach of education, health care and advocacy for children with disabilities in Honduras is making a difference. Through comprehensive, long-term special education, health care, and parental support, Un Mundo has had success transforming the lives of over 40 children who want to become self-reliant, productive citizens. Since the program started in 2009, it has grown 5x in size with the ability to serve 50 children annually.
