In 2013 we started to work in comprehensive reconstruction and disaster reduction in the Mountain of Guerrero, after hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel hit the region where 85% of the indigenous population in the state is settled. The work carried out has resulted in a considerable level of appropriation and cultural revaluation of adobe as a secure construction system. More communities are now interested in our projects. Currently we are building with the families 20 secure and sustainable houses.

Challenge

The project will be carried out in the Municipality of Malinaltepec, in the Me'phaa Communities of La Soledad and Ojo de Agua. The soil is deteriorated due to deforestation and agrochemicals, making the area more subject to landslides. In 2013, two hurricanes affected over 230,000 people in Guerrero. Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic is repercuting on the main income-generating activities, such as the cultivation and sale of corn and coffee, fueling the causes of migration.

Long-Term Impact

Your support will provide 20 new secure houses, adapted to local climate, geology and culture for 20 families. 100 people will strengthen their capacities to manage risks, 4 local promoters and 20 masons will be trained in traditional adobe systems and will learn how to provide maintenance. The construction process will be accompanied by the reforestation of local varieties of trees.
