Dying without palliative care is too often what happens in India. Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration is a grassroots initiative, building capacity for palliative, end-of-life and curative interventions in resource-constrained countries. We collaborate with health professionals in regions of South Asia to support patients dying of cancer by sharing knowledge through teaching, advocacy for pain management, places to spend one's final days (hospice care) and care at home in rural villages.

Challenge

The challenge is to train health care professionals in India. Few health care professionals have the knowledge or training to provide needed services for those dying of cancer. As a result, the Indian government's National Health Plan 2017 states that every health and wellness centre in every community should have palliative care, along with health promotion treatment and rehabilitation.

Long-Term Impact

Ten years ago there was limited palliative care but, with support from donors for Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration, care at the Hyderabad Centre has almost tripled. Donors have provided quality palliative care services, advocacy, training and policy not just in Telangana, but also in the state of Andhra Pradesh and in South Asia. Health care professionals from across India have learned to advance palliative care through education by teams of doctors, nurses and other professionals.
